(or How to Tell People Without Getting the “Sad Eyes”)
Conversations about health can get awkward fast. People either overreact (“Oh my gosh, are you dying?!”) or brush it off (“You look fine to me!”).
Decide What You Want to Share
You don’t have to give everyone your medical file. A simple, “I have a liver condition, so I’m focusing on my health right now,” works for most situations.
Prepare for the “Miracle Cure” Brigade
Someone will suggest lemon water, essential oils, or their cousin’s herbal tea. Smile, thank them, and move on. You don’t owe them a debate.
Keep the Tone Light When You Can
Humour is a great diffuser. “I’ve decided my liver gets spa treatment from now on – only the best groceries for this diva.”
Build Your Support Squad
Find the people who will actually listen and understand. This might be friends, family, or online communities for people with liver conditions.
Talking about it isn’t about making others comfortable – it’s about making sure you get the understanding and space you need.
